Season-Long Protection Against Carrot Rust Fly

PSILA Protect is an innovative carrot rust fly management solution designed for carrots, celery, parsnips, and parsley root crops. Using naturally occurring onion oil, the system creates an odour barrier around the crop that helps repel adult carrot rust flies and reduce egg laying throughout the season.

The granules are placed inside specially designed diffusers positioned around the crop perimeter. Once installed, the onion oil is gradually released into the surrounding environment, creating a protective zone that disrupts host plant location by carrot rust flies. Installed in spring, the system provides season-long protection with minimal labour requirements and is suitable for both conventional and organic production systems.

PSILA Protect offers growers a practical, residue-free approach to managing carrot rust fly pressure while supporting crop quality and marketable yield.

Application Guidelines

Quantity

30 g onion oil granules per diffuser.

Frequency

One application at the start of the season. For extended protection under high pest pressure, replenish with 15 g of granules per diffuser after six months.

Best Time to Apply

Install in spring before the first carrot rust fly flight period.

Tank Mix / Adjuvants

Not applicable.

Pre-Harvest / Residues

Remove diffusers approximately one week before harvest. Suitable for residue-free and organic production systems.

Application Method

Place 4 diffusers per hectare around the crop perimeter. Under high pest pressure, increase to 8 diffusers per hectare.Diffusers should be positioned approximately 50 metres apart. In wide or deep fields greater than 100 metres, additional diffusers may be placed within the crop area.

Carrot rust fly is one of the most damaging pests of carrots and other Apiaceae crops, including celery, parsnips, and parsley root. Adult flies lay eggs near the base of host plants, typically during periods of higher humidity in the late afternoon and evening. Once hatched, larvae tunnel into roots, creating feeding galleries that reduce crop quality, increase disease susceptibility, and make produce unmarketable.

Two to three generations may occur during the growing season depending on local conditions. Because damage occurs below ground, infestations are often not detected until harvest. Preventing egg laying is therefore a key component of successful carrot rust fly management.
